Adepts serve as guardians for monasteries and temples, they stand firm while others fall short. Known to favor pole-arms and to strike with lightning speed, they are the main practitioners of the Mystic Cobra school, and study few other martial disciplines if any.

The adepts are a, relatively, recent sight in the empire, warrior-monks who traditionally protect monasteries and temples from the predations of bandits and irritable nobles seeking retaliation for some slight or another. Much like crusaders, adepts are spiritual individuals who sought to harden and train their bodies for the protection of others and themselves.Theirs is an essentially staunch lot, able to take a lot of punishment in service of their goals. Most adepts tend to stick to the area around the monastery, temple, or person that they protect, so as to better rush to their defense should the need arise. Adepts without a cause to protect, somewhat less common, usually become wanderers in search of something worth their skill. Many a village has been appreciative of a adept in their time of need, even if the individual in question inevitably moved on to new lands. Some adepts, knowingly or not, serve foul or dishonorable lords or monks because such is their duty and there are few things in the world that can keep a adept from his or her duty.

One of the most famous institutions for adepts is the Falling Star academy in the northern provinces, where feudal lords send their daughters to learn lethal martial arts to better defend themselves in that hostile land. The masters of that academy are well known and respected in the martial artist world, known for their dedication to their teaching and unwillingness to give any ground before any spoiled girl expecting noble treatment from them. Azure Dragon is the martial artist who brought attention to this recent style of teaching, for his single-handed defense of Wen Yun castle against an entire army of desert people. He held a small pass by himself while his comrades retreated to regroup at Wen Yun, slaying the invaders left and right until he finally died on his feet. It’s said the desert people refused to pass his body, afraid it was merely a trick, and now circumvent that pass entirely to assault the fortress of Wen Yun, buying the defenders several days of warning with his death.

Making an Adept


Abilities: Adepts are primarily melee combatants who specialize in support, as such they benefit greatly from Strength and Constitution. Intelligence and Dexterity are often prerequisites for feats chosen by Adepts.

Races: Any race can take up the path of the Adept, though few Mojh are willing to put there own lives on the line to protect others.

Honor: Highly disciplined, Adepts are always Honorable.

Starting Age: Human, Charad 15+2d6; Mojh 15+2d8

Hit Die: D10

Class Skills {4 + Int modifier}: Balance (Dex), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Heal (Wis), Intimidate (Cha), Jump (Str), Martial Lore (Int), Knowledge (religion) (Int), and Profession (Wis).

Weapon Groups: Basic + 2

Armor Proficiencies: Adepts are proficient with light and medium armor, but not shields.

Maneuvers: As an Adept, you must know Mystic Cobra. The other default disciplines open to you are Devoted Spirit, Army of One and Stone Dragon.

At first level only, you can substitute any default discipline (aside from Mystic Cobra), for one of the following optional disciplines: Black Heron, Broken Blade, Golden Saint, Raging Storm, Silver Crane* or Twin Spirt.

*You must trade Devoted Spirit to take Silver Crane.

You can recover a single maneuver by using a full-round action to mediate.

Stances: Your stances work as normal.

Polearm Focus: At 1st level you gain Weapon Focus with polearms.

Die-Hard: At 3rd level you gain Die-hard as a bonus feat, whether or not you would normally qualify.

Strength of Mind: You become immune to stunning and sleep effects.

Mettle: If a you make a successful Fort or Will Save against a spell or effect with a partial affect on a save, instead you suffer no affect at all.

Polearm Specialization: At 6th level you gain Weapon Specialization as a bonus feat with polearms.

Polearm Adaption: You have mastered the art of using a polearm in close combat. You can now treat any pole-arm as a double weapon striking with the back end as if it were a quarterstaff (1d6+1/2 Strength Modifier, x2 Bludgeoning). No matter the reach of the original weapon this ability can only be used on targets with 5 feet.

Damage Reduction: Starting at 9th level you gain DR 1/-. This improves by 1 at every 4th level.

Blade Meditation: At 12th level you gain the feat Blade Meditation with the chosen discipline of Mystic Cobra, as a bonus feat.

Instant Recovery: At 10th level you gain the extraordinary ability to recover all your expended maneuvers as a free action once per day. This increases to 2/day at 20th level.

Greater Polearm Focus: At 11st level you gain Greater Weapon Focus with polearms.

Greater Polearm Specialization: At 14st level you gain Greater Weapon Specialization with polearms.

Polearm Supremacy: At 20th level you gain the Weapon Supremacy feat with a specific polearm of your choice.
